Journalism 101 - Week 1

for The Dentonite

WELCOME TO THE DENTONITE!

I’m going to be sending these bite-sized lessons out every Friday to help you guys gain a little knowledge of the field while you are interning with us.

Role and Functions of Journalists:

  • Disseminate information
  • Increase public awareness
  • Interpret facts
  • Encourage decisions, influence change and shape public opinion

How to write a LEDE

A lede is the first sentence of your story. It is generally only ONE sentence and tries to fit in as many of the 5 W’s as possible. (Who, What, When, Where, Why). Click the link to see a more detailed article on how to write a lede. Also, note the stupid spelling of lede.

Different types of ledes

There are many different kinds of ledes like, a hard news lede, descriptive lede and scene-setting lede that all add to the story in a different way. Click the link above to see examples of all of the different kinds of ledes.

Nut Grafs

A nut graf typically follows the lede and tells you what the story is about. In other words, why should the reader CARE? The link above has examples and walks you through how to write your first nut graf. Again, note the stupid spelling of graf.
